DEMOCRATS, HOW LONG WILL WE CONTINUE LIKE THIS?
✍🏽 Sali Lushaj
Dear Democratic sisters and brothers,
Yesterday, a nationwide protest was called, but participation was extremely low. It was a painful sight, perhaps the weakest turnout in the entire history of the Democratic Party since its founding.
Why have we reached this point? Shouldn’t we stop and seriously reflect on the reasons?
First, closed electoral lists have created a reality that distances Democrats from decision-making and deprives them of hope for representation.
Second, the repeated candidacy of the same people for more than two terms has caused fatigue, dissatisfaction, and a lack of trust.
Third, many members of parliament have not remained close to their constituencies and have failed to maintain consistent ties with the Democrats who supported them.
Fourth, we have created a political culture in which some leave their municipalities to become members of parliament, while others take the opposite path. Meanwhile, young people are denied the opportunity to assume responsibility and bring new energy to the party.
Please tell me: which member of parliament had a family member standing beside them at this protest? Why were even their closest relatives not mobilized? If they cannot convince their own family members, how can they convince the citizens?
And what about us, the ordinary Democrats?
Aren’t you ashamed to remain under Sali Berisha’s shadow, when he is the person who kept this party alive during its most difficult days? Without his contribution, many of those who hold positions today would never have reached where they are.
Where is the Women’s Forum? Where is its voice? Where is the party leadership? Hasn’t the time come to speak openly, without fear and without personal calculations?
Enough of this situation! If we continue like this and enter the next local elections without serious reflection, we risk experiencing the greatest electoral catastrophe in the history of the Democratic Party. I assure you that, under these conditions, there is a real risk that we will win only Tropojë and Kavajë.
A few friends and I, who have remained faithful to our ideals, have given everything for this party. We have endured years in prison, been wounded by bullets, and lost our loved ones. We did not do this for positions, privileges, or personal gain, but for democracy and Albania.
Therefore, to those who have served more than two terms, I say: take a step back and make way for the younger generation! A party that does not renew itself, does not listen to its members, and does not value the sacrifices of its steadfast supporters risks losing not only elections, but also the people’s trust.
The Democratic Party belongs to no one. It belongs to the Democrats who have sacrificed for it and who still believe that Albania deserves a better future.
Respect and gratitude to all true, steadfast Democrats!
