“Unë mund t’ju siguroj se Presidenti i Shteteve të Bashkuara Joe Biden, Sekretari i Shteteve të Bashkuara, Tony Blinken dhe unë, të gjithë kemi besim të plotë te ambasadorja Yuri Kim,” deklaroi në Tiranë Ndihmës Sekretarja e Shtetit për Çështjet Evropiane dhe Euroaziatike, Karen Donfried, në një intervistë të mirë-përgatitur me korrespondentin lokal të Zërit të Amerikës. Mbrojtja e kolegëve diplomatë është praktikë standarde në diplomacinë amerikane, edhe në rastet kur një mbrojtje e tillë publike mund të jetë e pajustifikuar.
Megjithatë, kjo është gjithashtu shpesh një shenjë e problemeve.
Ambasadorja Kim u akuzua se kishte ndërhyrë në drejtësinë shqiptare me qëllim që të bënte presion për një vendim gjykate kundër opozitës kryesore, Partisë Demokratike: ajo donte të favorizonte një grup të ndarë të partisë që pretendonte se janë drejtuesit e partisë. Kim e ka pranuar indirekt ndërhyrjen e saj përmes një postimi në Twitter.
Ambasadorja është përplasur vazhdimisht me liderin e opozitës, Sali Berisha dhe ka treguar mbështetje të vazhdueshme për qeverinë aktuale Rama, pavarësisht raporteve të Departamentit të Shtetit që shprehin kritika të forta për korrupsionin zyrtar të nivelit të lartë dhe qeverisjen e keqe.
Profesori Ilir Kalemaj nga një degë e Universitetit të Nju Jorkut në Tiranë vë në dukje një rritje të anti-amerikanizmit në këtë komb shumë pro-amerikan: “Kjo ka të bëjë me kapadaillëkun e ambasadores”.
“Pavarësisht se ajo është një simbol i vendit të saj, zonja Kim është helmuese në gjuhën e saj, më e afërt me qeverinë dhe më mbështetëse e kryeministrit Rama,” i tha ai degës lokale të CNN- A2 gjatë javës së kaluar.
Është interesante se Partia Demokratike e opozitës ka qenë që nga themelimi i saj tre dekada një forcë e vendosur Atlanticiste.
Është interesante se Partia Shqipëria u fut në Partneritetin për Paqe të NATO-s në vitet ’90 nën qeverisjen e drejtuar nga PD dhe arriti anëtarësimin në Aleancë në vitin 2009.
PD ka kritikuar përpjekjet lobuese të qeverisë në Uashington, të cilat fokusohen në sigurimin e mbështetjes për partinë në pushtet.
Sanksionet aktuale amerikane ndaj zotit Berisha, të shpallura në vitin 2021, janë parë si pjesë e kësaj skeme partizane.

“I can assure you that the President of the United States Joe Biden, the Secretary of the United States Tony Blinken and I all have full confidence in Ambassador Yuri Kim” declared Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried in Tirana in a well-prepared interview with the local Voice of America correspondent. Defending fellow diplomats is standard practice in US diplomacy even in the cases where such a public defense might be unjustified.
However, this is also often a sign of trouble.
Ambassador Kim was accused of intervening with the Albanian judiciary in order to press for a court ruling against the main opposition Democratic Party (DP): she wanted to favor a splinter group of the party which pretended to be the party leadership. Kim has indirectly admitted her intervention through a tweet. The ambassador has repeatedly tussled with opposition leader Berisha and has shown repeated support for the current Rama government despite Department of State reports expressing strong criticism of high-level official corruption and bad governance.

“Despite the fact that she is a symbol of her country Ms. Kim is caustic in her language, closer to the government and more supportive of (Prime Minister) Rama” he told the local CNN affiliate A2 TV last week.
Indeed, an October 2021 survey commissioned by Euronews Albania October found that only 32.6% of the respondents would side with the US in an imaginary conflict with the EU; the latter’s support reached 56.9%. Earlier the support figures would have reversed places.
Interestingly the opposition Democratic Party has been since its founding three decades ago an Atlanticist stalwart. Albania entered NATO’s Partnership for Peace in the 1990s under DP-led governments and achieved membership in the Alliance in 2009. The DP has criticized government lobbying efforts in Washington DC which focus on securing support for the ruling party. Current US sanctions against Mr. Berisha, announced in 2021, have been seen as part of this partisan scheme
