Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on US and NATO leaders to impose a no-fly zone over his country as the war against Russia continues, paving the way for a debate on the consequences of such a move. .

“If there was a no-fly zone and if we imposed it, it would mean that American planes would fly in rivalry with the Russians. “And we would have the risk of American planes crashing Russian planes and vice versa,” Dan Hoffman, former head of the CIA station in Moscow, told Fox News Digital.

A no-fly zone prohibits aircraft from a specific area and is often used over government buildings for security reasons. They have also been deployed during conflicts to prevent fighter jets from attacking the area.

Hoffman told Fox News that going back to the Cold War, the US strategy did not dictate “direct kinetic engagement with the Soviet Union or Russia.”

What could happen if the US imposes a no-fly zone on Ukraine?

“This means that our soldiers will not raise their weapons to shoot them and vice versa,” he said.

On the contrary, the US has fought Russia through third parties since the end of World War II, including currently, in Ukraine. However, a no-fly zone would change that, putting American soldiers in direct conflict with the Russians.

Zelenski had a conversation in Zoom with over 280 US lawmakers on Saturday and asked for military support and urgent humanitarian assistance, including “control of the skies” to fight Russia. He called on NATO and President Biden last week to impose a no-fly zone over “important parts” of the country.

“We repeat it every day: Close the skies over Ukraine,” Zelenski said in a video posted on Twitter on Sunday, accompanied by English subtitles.

But his cries have fallen on deaf ears.

NATO and the White House have denied establishing a no-fly zone, with some US leaders describing the move as having catastrophic consequences.

“The only way to establish a no-fly zone is to send NATO fighter jets into Ukrainian airspace, then impose that no-fly zone by shooting down Russian planes,” he said.
